Ask: Are you happy?

We live in a world that tells us: “you need to do whatever makes you happy,” “stay with that person as long as they make you happy,” “if you make enough money you will be happy,” “if someone understood me I would be happy.”  The list goes on and on.

Look at the Declaration of Independence.  It states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

It’s at the very core of who we are. We want to be happy.  I think we have a pretty good handle on being grumpy, depressed, angry, jealous, stressed, overworked, underappreciated and bored.  Why can’t we just be happy?

Jennifer Horton wrote an article called “Do happy people live longer lives?”  She wrote:  “Happiness, loosely defined as satisfaction and appreciation for one’s life, appears to be the psychological equivalent of Vitamin C.  In ways that aren’t yet completely understood, a positive outlook on life helps to protect against the negative effects of stress, safeguarding people from becoming sick.”

She later went on to say that happier people live longer.  Check out the whole article at: science.howstuffworks.com

The next 3 Sundays at The Heights we will be asking ourselves that very question… “are we happy?”  Is it even possible, and will it last?  This new Ask Series will lead us up to Easter.  We are naming our Easter message  “Victory” because we all need a victory, and Jesus gives us the perfect example of victory over death.

March 30th    Ask: Are you happy, is it possible?

April 6th          Ask:  Can you be content and be happy?

April 13th    Ask: I’m happy; now what?

April 20th    Easter Sunday “Victory.”   Service times 9am and 11am.

April 27th    Part 1 of an 8-part family series.
