Part 4 - James 2:10-13
Big idea: What do mercy and accountability have in common?
Main Point: No sliding scale
Prophetic thought: As Americans, we have the freedom to say and do whatever we want. As followers of Jesus, we have a different set of moral standards that often don't mix with culture. Society seems to have a slow decline in morals. Because of that, we can find ourselves playing the comparison game that says, "At least I'm not like that." And with that attitude, we become less aware of our own struggles. We forget that as followers of Jesus, we are called to live within the true freedom of God's mercy.
Application: As believers, we must hold ourselves just as accountable to the Word as we hold others. We expect to receive mercy, yet we withhold that exact same mercy from those around us. What does it look like to take the training wheels off our faith and show radical mercy? It means when someone gossips about you or breaks your trust, you stop the cycle of retaliation and actively protect their reputation. It means a boss choosing to forgive a costly workplace mistake, giving an employee a second chance to learn rather than throwing the book at them. It means looking at a lonely person trapped in a mess of their own making and choosing to cross the street to lift them up, rather than looking down on them with judgment. True mercy is never safe or comfortable. It is exactly what Jesus did for us on the cross, and it is the ultimate proof that our faith is alive.
